CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
ANUSARA® YOGA:
Anusara (a-nu-sa-ra) means flowing with Grace. Founded by John
Friend, Anusara Yoga is a hatha yoga system that unifies Universal
Principles of Alignment with a non-dual philosophy that is epitomized
by a celebration of the heart.
ASHTANGA - MYSORE Ashtanga Yoga is a system of Yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi and it involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures - a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body and a calm mind.
Committing to an Ashtanga/Mysore discipline will allow the student not only to refine and advance in her/his own practice, but to work with the subtle, energetic body. Yoga's ultimate goal, through the meditative practices, is self-realization.
The first series of postures is known as the Primary Series. It will be introduced to students of all levels, including beginners, independently, gradually, accordingly to each ones prior experience, physical condition, mindfulness and commitment.
To perform asana correctly in Ashtanga yoga, one must incorporate the use of vinyasa, which means synchronizing breath and movement. For each movement, there is one breath. In this way all asanas are assigned a certain number ofvinyasas. Respecting the vinyasa system is one of the biggest challenges of the practice.
Expect to receive hands on guidance and attention to special needs. This is the traditional strategy called Mysore Style - to learn Ashtanga, where the initial priority is to allow the student to memorize the sequence of postures. Therefore, this is not a led class, but a class with a flexible start time, dedicated to a progressive way of teaching, with a long-term view of improving the persons physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Students already familiar with the Ashtanga method are welcome to come and practice.
EXPLORATORY MOVEMENT FOR YOGA:
practice draws from Hatha Yoga, Kundalini, Qigong, Taoist
Yoga and sound, systematic movement of the human body. The instruction
considers the individual needs of every student, and is based
on the unique issues of each student's posture, injuries or limitations,
mindset, and energy level. In practicing each asana, the student
is guided to use the soundest principles of natural movement.
The focus is on stability from the inner body (core) so that the
outer body can move freely and lengthen. As a result, the body
becomes firmer and stronger in the core, bringing ease of movement
to the outer body. Blended into the practice is a focus on energy
and movement of energy that helps expand and ground rather than
contract the body, and consequently, the mind and spirit. Yoga
becomes a practice of ease rather than one of stress and effort.
GENTLE YOGA:
This a gentle, flowing class is designed for the beginner or anybody
who is curious about hatha yoga but thinks they cannot do it.
HATHA FLOW:
This class is a fusion of styles, drawing elements from Ashtanga
and Anusara. A warm, flowing, meditative class harmonizing breathe
with movement cultivating strength, balance and flexibility. Students
will learn to refine postures and move beyond the limitations
of the body and mind.
INTRO TO YOGA:
This is the perfect place to begin exploring the body and building
your understanding of basic yoga fundamentals including alignment,
breath and meditation.
SOMATICS:
A safe, gentle style of yoga focused on inward
sensing and conscious rebalancing of the body. The term "soma"
refers to the body as experienced and directed from within, and
Somatic Yoga cultivates within us a sensitive inner awareness
and control of our physical state. Through principles of awareness
we work directly with the voluntary and involuntary nervous systems
to promote healthy alignment and movement patterns. We perform
specific movement sequences to engage unconscious reflexes which
balance muscle tension and promote muscle lengthening. We also
consciously release holding in the body by being mindful of our
internal sensations, learning how to inhibit muscle tension and
allow greater flexibility and relaxation. While this practice
is physically gentle, its effects are profound.
YIN:
Yin
yoga utilizes long, passively-held postures designed to enhance
flexibility within the fascial web of the body and the deep connective
tissues surrounding ligaments and joints. These deep tissues naturally
harden around the skeletal structure (and misalignments) over
the years, unless we consistently stretch and hydrate them, through
a practice like Yin yoga. Yin yoga is appropriate for all body
types and levels of yoga experience.
In the Yin yoga practice, we use the mind to cultivate release
and letting go in the physcial body. By calming and quietting
the mind, the physical body releases held tension.
